Mkhargrdzeli-Argutashvili (in georgian), Argutinsky-Dolgoruky (in russian) – surname of Georgian princes and noblemen of Armenian origin. This family is not to be confounded with the Russian house of Princes Dolgorouky, sprung from Rurik: they have nothing in common with them.
Joseph Argutinsky, an Armenian by birth, and Armenian patriarch, (born in the year 1758 and deceased in 1800), had rendered famous services to Russia, by contributing with all his influence to extend the dominion of Russia beyond the Caucasus. Paul I exalted him, together with his brothers and nephews, to the princely dignity of Russia, in the year 1800, March 22nd; and as the name of Argutinsky in the Armenian language means the same as in the Russian Dolgoruky, Paul authorized them to call themselves Argutinsky-Dolgoruky,* nobody knows what for.
