Detailed Information

Kukia Cemetery One of Tbilisi’s oldest cemeteries, and arguably its most diverse: unlike most others in the city, it is not confined to one religion, denomination, or ethnic group. One can find Armenians, Azeris, Italians, Russians, and Poles, among others.

The cemetery’s relatively peripheral location—even today, the Kukia neighbourhood itself can feel almost like a villa — protected it from the Soviet demolition visited upon graves in the city centre.

Some notable residents: Ekaterina Svanidze (Stalin’s first wife), Alexandre Konstantine Morozov (a key orchestrator of Stalinist repressions in Tbilisi), and Dagny Juel (Norwegian writer and model for Edvard Munch, murdered by a jealous lover at the Grand Hotel; her remains have since been repatriated but the monument survives).
