Detailed Information

Timotesubani Monastery – In the village Timotesubani (17km from Borjomi) there is a preserved monument of Georgian architecture, a large monastery complex (XI-XIII centuries), the main building of which is the Assumption Church (XII-XIII centuries), built of pink “Georgian brick”. The building has three pointed apses on the east side in a central cruciform dome.

The neck of the dome rests on two free-standing columns and the slopes of the altar. Height 28 meters (with a cross, width 19 meters, length 11 meters). The north windows are built and painted. Later, brick gate was built on the west side, and another gate with smoothed stones on the south.

The church is the most important monument of Georgian culture, which was included in the World Culture Survival Fund due to its unique painting. The painting was painted no later than the 20s of the XIII century and belongs to a number of magnificent monuments of the era of Queen Tamar. A hall church made of cut stones (XI century) has also survived.

Monks live in the houses in the courtyard of the monastery. These houses can be called senaki or cells.
